Have you tried copy and paste from the PDF into a blank WORD window?

There are numerous reasons why it might not work:

.. The author may have protected the PDF with a password.

.. Your PDF reader won't allow copying of the text.

.. The PDF is really a cover sheet for a bit mapped image - You need optical character recognition for that.
