What do you mean by "indexing"?

I've never seen this be anything but instantaneous.

I just looked at a mailbox with (checking) 3030 messages. Sorting
upwards by date was immediate. Sorting downwards by date was
immediate. Sorting by status (1197 messages are unread) was immediate.
Sorting by subject took less than one second.

Apparently not.

Again, what do you mean by "indexing"? Please provide a stepwise
procedure by which someone can replicate your problem. Machine specs
are also relevant at this point. I'm using a 17" PowerBook with remote
IMAP mailboxes.
