[X Newbies]Mail Problem

I just switched ISP's and deleted the old account from my Mail program. I
had done this in Entourage which I also use intermittently and all it did
was delete the account settings, not the saved emails. In Mail, everything
disappeared in an instant and I sure wish I had some of those emails back.
Anybody have any idea where they might have gone? Can they be retrieved or
are they permanently deleted?
