Perhaps more clarification is in order: There are four places where
fonts may exist and be recognised in OS X.
1) /System/Library/Fonts/
2) /System Folder/Fonts/
3) /Library/Fonts/
4)~/Library/Fonts/ (the same as writing /Users/xxx/Library/Fonts/
where "xxx" is the user short name)
#1 is what Eugene's original response addressed - don't go there!
#2 is OS 9's font folder.
#3 is for all users.
#4 is user-specific.
I believe that a couple apps even have rogue locations all their own...
