[X Newbies] Disk first aid button grayed out

Dave, you can run repair permissions from the startup disk but you 
cannot run repair disk from the startup disk.

"Disk First Aid cannot verify or repair the startup disk …"

To repair your startup disk you will need to boot from your OS X 
install CD or another bootable OS X disk.
