file sharing os x and xp

Good evening,
	Have finally gotten my powerbook to connect to my desktop xp 
machine through the airport extreme base station.  On my powerbook I 
have a globe on my desktop that shows the shared drive.  I was 
wondering how do I disconnect from that or is it always going to be 
there?  Also, should I disable file sharing on my pc when I don't 
need to transfer files?
