Probably not cost effective. You don't know when they're going to 
upgrade their equipment - the Motorola modem I had for a couple of 
years just quit about 6 months ago when my cable company upgraded some 
of their hub infrastructure. They swapped it - no cost to me.

If you own the modem, when there's a problem and you call in for 
service, you're only going to hear "the problem lies with your modem".

With my cable company, the cost of the modem is bundled - you pay for 
it regardless. If I had the option, I still wouldn't buy my own.
