[X Newbies] Mouse and Keyboard

Speaking of keyboards and mice...
I'm working on a TiBook, running 10.2.8, and use Quark (yes 4.1) quite 
a lot still. Most of my clients don't even run OSX let a lone Quark 6...
I've managed to get the function keys to work if I use a modifier key 
(function key) any wiz out there know if I can do away with that all 
together?
