Sorry not to be clear. I was using "virgin" in the sense that there was no OS installed on that volume. When I learned that OS X can't be uninstalled, I did your option b). Most of the stuff I was saving there were photos, mp3's, and music notation files about 30 gigs or so. . So it took about three cups of coffee to complete the necessary transfers with my aging war horse. Wiping the volume clean with the disk utility was a snap. Thanks to all for the advice.
