If the problem is that you're simply holding the space bar down too 
long, open up System Preferences and go to the Keyboard & Mouse pane. 
In the Keyboard tab, how do you have "Delay Until Repeat" set? That 
setting determines how quickly you have to get your finger (or thumb) 
off the key before it starts repeating. Try moving it closer to the 
"Long" end and see if that fixes the problem.
