Interesting.  I had not noticed this feature.  When I click on the 
little arrow in front of filtered message that I've replied to, I get 
an Error box that reads:

Mail was unable to find your response to the message "whateverthe 
subjectwas".  You may have deleted the message or moved it out of your 
Sent messages folder.

It very much does exist in my Sent messages folder.  Tried rebuilding 
both folders and still no dice.  Interesting.  Works fine in the In 
box, so I'll now be using this feature there at least.
