[X-Newbies] Login problems

My son bought an ice book dual usb that had OSX installed, he has been 
using it for a couple of months with no problems.  Now he cannot get 
past the login.  When he types in his password it goes to a black screen 
that says,

Darwin/BSD (Isaiahscomputer.local)(console)
Login:

Is there someway to bypass this to log in.  I am not very good with OSX, 
I have always used 9.1 and don't know much yet about 10.  Can you help 
or tell me where to get it.  Thanks, Jim
