You *should* use .Mac, but even if you don't, why does that rule Virex
out? It's a standalone product just like any other.
As for which one is "best," I know from experience that Virex can be
set to be almost totally invisible (one bounce then quit during
startups), but I'm sure they are all EQUALLY effective at stopping all
those OS X viruses -- which is to say, none.

Again, can't speak for the others, but Virex does not mess up my system
in anyway. I'd beware ANYTHING with the Symantec brand on it though ...
