[X-Newbies] Generic Icon

Recently an application that has been installed for several months 
reverted to a generic application icon, both in the application 
folder and dock.  I trashed the app and prefs.  After checking the 
'find' function that showed nothing I reinstalled the app from a cd. 
The generic icon reappeared.
I know that this isn't very high on the problem chain but it bugs me 
to see the generic in the dock.
Any ideas?
