I'd say to buy a bigger internal, archive some very important stuff  
to the 13 (to make it somewhat useful) and remove it and store it.  
Keep the 40 as second internal. Seagate or Western Digital, 7200 rpm,  
decent cache, say 8MB. You could put the 160 you have inside, and buy  
a bigger drive for the external (a firewire box say)
