You would have to purchase 10.4 ( http://www.apple.com/macosx/ tiger/ ) to get from 10.3.x to 10.4.x - but I would just wait for 10.5 ( http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/ ) which should be out really soon now (May - June-ish). Installing it is super easy, and rarely causes any problems. To get the latest updates for the OS you have, pick "Software Updates" from the Apple menu. This also very rarely causes any issues for an average user, so you don't have to constantly ride herd on all updates to prevent this or that thing from blowing up. Then it depends on the material you have at hand. I would clone the iBook to an external (firewire) hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then install a clean 10.4 using the feature that imports your settings from the old installation. I don't know if 10.4 makes it possible to simply "upgrade" 10.3, I doubt it. Some iBook G3s do not support DVDs. Also depending on the iBook G3 model, you may need to use a third party utility to assist in the installation. That would be XpostFacto. What message does this person receive when Mail fails? Has she tried retrieving her email via her ISP's webmail interface? (Once in a very long while an email will seem to get 'stuck' after which every subsequent message remains on the server, inaccessible to any email application) Has she got her email account redirecting things to somewhere else? The answer is not pretty, but it works on my iMac with 10.4.9 and flip4Mac and VLC Media Player installed. VLC Media Player can be accessed via http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738 Do this: 1) In Safari, Control-click on the file you want to download. Select "Download linked file." 2) drag this file onto the icon for VLC Media Player. The file should play. Alternate strategy: 2) open this file in a text editor (I drag the file onto TextEdit). You will see a handful of lines like this: 2007-03-27 AM New Hampshire House of Representatives 3) Copy the first item in quotes (don't copy the quotes themselves). 4) Launch VLC Media Player and choose "Open Network..." from the File menu. 5) Paste the URL you copied into the new window (replace "udp://") and click OK. The file should play. I applaud the state of New Hampshire for offering this service, but, really, they need to upgrade their software infrastructure. Message-ID: <2552fa090704081147l69e43111g5b9f486e98bdf36c@mail.gmail.com> I have started getting "too many processes" error messages when opening .dmg files, but only after having worked for some time on my G5 with OS X (10.4.9). There seems to be more than enough memory I have about 1 GB and there is usually around 300 MB free, but I can't tell at the time I get the error message as the Activity Monitor app crashes every time I try to start it, but only when I get the "too many processes" error messages. Quiting apps doesn't seem to help. Anyone have an idea what is going on? Is this caused by a memory leak from an app or is this connected to the 10.4.9 update? Message-ID: <a06210200c23f9a6984d9@[10.242.129.146]> Like the title says, I can't backup. I use SuperDuper! to backup my Mac Mini's 80GB HD to an external HD via USB, and it's been super. But now, whenever I use it to backup my HD, it would just spin like a car's wheel in mud. The program still runs, it just doesn't do any copying anymore; the colored bars doesn't get longer. I once left it for 8 hours, but no, still hasn't finished copying. At first I thought it was my HD. I tried CCC, and it stopped with a dialog box saying "There was an error during copying Library from source to target: ditto:/Volumes/Backup... Device not" The dialog box was too small for the whole message(!?) So I thought, maybe it's my external HD. Maybe it just doesn't spin well anymore. Maybe, I don't know, I mishandled it a bit roughly, and it spins well for the first 20 minutes or so, but then would just idle and not do any write. Is that possible? Is it the HD or the power source? The ext HD is a "home-built" one, that is, I purchased a HD and a casing and put the HD in the casing. Perhaps it's the locally built power brick that is losing its oomph? If that is so, was it due to frequent handling? Because I always moved the ext HD around, from its storage space to the computer desk? Or is it due to rough handling? I always try to be gentle, but perhaps I put it down a bit to too hard one day. And if that is so, would that affect my MacMini HD too? I've been using my MacMini as a luggable, carrying it to work to use as my computer, then bringing it back home. I don't know OS X errors and that SuperDuper program well enough to guess. It could be hanging on a particular file that is locked, or corrupt. The first thing to do would be to run DiskWarrior, or run Disk Utility to make sure the disk is healthy. Boot from the OS X disk to run it on the system volume. It's a bit tricky to get into it - google for instructions if you haven't done it before. > So I thought, maybe it's my external HD. Maybe it just doesn't spin > well anymore. But they last for about 3,000 prints. The ML-2510's cartridge is more expensive than most because it includes the imaging drum in the same unit, so you are saved the (usually quite expensive) cost of having to purchase an imaging drum also. I don't purchase OEM toner cartridges myself. I've had great success with third party cartridges from MeritLine.
