[X-Newbies] Google search from Mail in Firefox?

When I highlight a word or phrase in a Mail e-mail message (and
despite Firefox being set as my default browser), right-click and
choose Google search, Safari opens and the search is run from there.
Is this a known issue? Is there anything to do about it?

BTW, I wonder why Apple got the absolutely mad idea to place default
browser settings in Safari, rather than in system preferences???
