Message-ID: <2552fa090703021152o14a1dba7t2f2bdb2a0ebfc388@mail.gmail.com> I have used Intego Personal Backup X4 to clone my system (Tiger 10.4.8) to a new internal HD that I purchased today. I started working from the new HD and got a message from OS X that I was using Firefox for the first time. That got me to wondering whether I should expect any nasty surprises or complications in connection with using a cloned OS X system on a new HD... Anyone have an idea? If you had backed up with SuperDuper! or Disk Utility I'd say no, but I don't know if Intego takes care of all of the issues that need to be taken care of when cloning a disk. Does Intego's documentation cover this issue? Does Intego's documentation cover > this issue? > > Phil The help file's entire text on this issue is as follows: "Cloning Volumes Under Mac OS X, you cannot simply copy your startup volume to another volume or disk. Because of the many invisible files it contains, copying the volume in this way would result in an incomplete copy containing only visible files, and you would not be able start up your computer from this volume. Cloning a volume, such as your startup volume, gives you an exact backup of the volume. This serves two purposes: You can start up your Mac from this cloned volume by holding down the Option (or Alt) key at startup and selecting it (whether it is an internal or external volume). You can use an external hard drive as a startup volume for several Macs in this manner. You can use it as a backup before installing any major upgrades or new applications if you are worried about your system becoming damaged. In the event of a problem, you can start up your Mac from this cloned volume, and clone it back to your startup volume, so your Mac is exactly as it was before installing the upgrade or software. Note: you must have administrator privileges to clone a volume. Intego Personal Backup X4 asks you to enter your administrator password when beginning the clone process. Also, you cannot clone a volume across a network. In order to clone a bootable Mac OS X startup volume you must first verify the following: 1.Select the destination volume's icon in the Finder and display information about the volumes. To do this, select File > Get Info, or press Command+I. 2.Expand the Ownership & Permissions section of the Info window by clicking its disclosure triangle. 3.Make sure that Ignore Ownership on this Volume is unchecked on this volume. To clone a volume to another volume, either on the same computer or on two different computers (across a network or connected directly), first select Clone from the Intego Personal Backup X4 menu. Then choose the source volume. Either drag this volume to the Drag here? section above the Source? button, or click the Source? button and navigate to select the source volume. Drag the destination volume to the Drag here? section above the Destination? button, or click the Destination? button and navigate to select the destination volume. The above screen shot shows a clone prepared from an iMac to an external Firewire hard drive. Intego Personal Backup X4 will then display the following window if the destination disk is not empty:" I can't see any problems, as long as "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" is unchecked. How do you read this? Since it is a system file, > does this mean that's impossible? Let's start with an analogy: A non-decorative part of your car isn't working. So even though you know nothing about what the part does or how cars work or how to fix them, you decide to throw away the damaged part without finding out if there is an underlying problem and hope that the car keeps running. Unfortunately the part is stuck and a small hammer doesn't work so you go to a forum where you hope there is someone more knowledgeable than you and ask if its OK to use a bigger hammer to beat on it until it breaks off. The answer would be, no! 1) Put the file back where it came from. 2) Run Disk Utility. This will tell you if there is a more serious underlying problem with the file system or not. If there is a problem, keep running it until there isn't a problem anymore. If Disk Utility is unable to fix the problem try rebooting in safe mode. Disk Utility runs as part of the safe mode startup process and can do things in this state that it can't when run on a live system. Once in safe mode try Disk Utility again. If this doesn't work try other tools like Disk Warrior, ProSoft, etc. At some point in this process you may find yourself in need of knowledgeable or professional help. 3 If you get to the point where you know your file system is OK then reinstall the version of Java that has the corrupted file. We know that this is version 1.4.2 from the line you included in your message. A little web searching tells us that its installer can be found at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/javaupdate142.html . You are also comforted since you read the documentation at the site and it tells you that other versions of Java 1.4.x will be completely replaced with the new installation. (By the way, if the first run of Disk Utility doesn't find any problems or only finds minor ones then you're probably Ok. If there were more serious problems, but they also are fixed then you're also OK, but there's no guarantee, depending on the type of damage found, that there aren't more corrupt or lost files. This is why regular and rotating backups are so important.) Else, if your file system and/or other files are still corrupted you save as much data as you can by telling SuperDuper! to ignore things it can't read. Then you wipe your disk, restore from your last good backup or reinstall from scratch, and then selectively restore from your backups. lsof is a command line tool that shows what files running processes have open. How does one tell SuperDuper to ignore things it can't read? I see nothing for this under preferences. I seem to have solved the immediate problem, as long as I haven't created another one. I shut down all apps except Finder. Trash still wouldn't empty. I unplugged the network cable and restarted the computer. Trash then emptied. I then tried another backup and it worked this time. I will have to see if I need to re-install java, which is where the corrupted file was. I didn't want to spring for the full rudder pedal set, and this cost a lot less (and takes up much less room). Not bad for $30 (maybe less via Amazon, etc.). Brian, there are lots of alternatives, however BeLight not only make software that is a pleasure to use, and works extremely well, their support is excellent as well. BeLight software is like OS X and most things made by Apple, relatively simple to use while being surprisingly flexible, stylish while being useful. Alternatives I have tried are frustrating in comparison. They have several applications each one of which targets a certain job, and they all work well. Recommended as great choice. Uninstall MailInfo. From a quick look at the company site I don't see any great benefit to using it. Most of the 'recent info' (quotes from computer magazines and the like) is from 2004, the demo includes the facts that 'where the email was read is based on info from a third party which may be inaccurate' and 'an indication of the email having been read, or not, may not be accurate'. I'm paraprhasing but that's the gist of what I get from it. -- William Lane Calgary, Canada via Mac OSX - Mail From globetrotterdk at gmail.com Sat Mar 10 09:36:56 2007 From: globetrotterdk at gmail.com (Brian Durant) Date: Sat Mar 10 09:37:06 2007 Subject: [X-Newbies] How to block MailInfo and the like from phoning home from Mail. So does MailInfo work transparently with all receiving email clients? I know that Entourage has a 'receipt' feature, but it doesn't work with Mail or other email clients. Are you sure that you are in fact sending receipts back to them? If so, how do they show up in your email app? Do they show up in the Sent folder/mailbox? In Mail I'd be inclined to set up a Rule to block sending based on content. -- William Lane Calgary, Canada via Mac OSX - Mail From globetrotterdk at gmail.com Sat Mar 10 11:58:28 2007 From: globetrotterdk at gmail.com (Brian Durant) Date: Sat Mar 10 11:58:32 2007 Subject: [X-Newbies] How to block MailInfo and the like from phoning home from Mail. Brian, Mucho Big ThanX for starting this Important and very much looonngg over-due Thread. Bravo! Most all other Mail applications I've used in the past have had a setting in their Preferances to enable or dis-able/what-to-do whenever such incoming Reciepts(requests for) have arrived, and I've long wondered about this topic since moving over to using Apple Mail, nada-zilch in Prefs, ditto in it's Help files. I do hope that one of the Gurus here on List will tell us All how-to corral/stop/prevent/fix such security breaches(that Apple should have built into Mail from the get-go) ? , without having a need for us to revert/changing our choice to someother application (more securitywise.. ie: Eudora? or ThunderBird?) for all of (or some) our mail correspondence purposes to regain our own self-wellbeing and comfort concerning security controls. Are you tuned-in here Apple? Any and All ideas, suggestions and help to List will be very much appreciated and bigtime welcomed. I have available a mini disc player and amp with various outputs - toslink and line are the primary ones. My first thought was to take the output from either the player or the amp and input this into the Mac to capture the audio stream, but I have no idea whether this is workable or what software to use. Has anyone done this and could you give me some idea of how to do it for the best results. Here's what I'd like. 1. Permitted hours total on a per day / week basis. 2. Login hours. (say, user x can only login from 16:00 - 18:00) This would just be under the normal OS X 10.49 on a iMac btw. Any hidden features to be aware of? I'm sure the server solutions that Apple offers would have this, but I figured that I'd ask. ;) Dana From caraloca at gmail.com Fri Mar 30 07:10:49 2007 From: caraloca at gmail.com (arturo oropeza) Date: Fri Apr 6 06:31:58 2007 Subject: [X-Newbies] upgrading an ibook g3 Message-ID: Hi, I have never do this , to be honest is the first time I have a mac.
