Hello all listers.
I wanted to let you know about 2 new email lists hosted at
TheMacintoshGuy.com, one for Automator and the other for Dashboard.
Both lists are intended for regular end user type discussion. Heavy
development type questions should be relegated to some of the other
development based lists that have been created such as Apple's
Dashboard-dev list.
We would also like to welcome Tiger users to all of our Mac OS X
based lists:
X Users
X Newbies
X Servers
X Software
X Hardware
X Unix
X Dreams

Subject: [X-Servers] Xserve Initial Config Problems
Message-ID:
I'm an Xserve newbie ... just got my new Xserve G5, OS X 10.3.7
installed. I'm trying to configure it from my PowerBook using Server
Assistant, but it doesn't show up in the dialog for configuring it
remotely. I'm connected on the same network it is, with a Linksys
router, plus I've tried connecting it directly to just the PowerBook.
But it's not showing up. Also, after going though it's intial
startup, the blue activity lights all remain lit all the time, even
without it connected to anything. Does that indicate a problem before
I even connect? I guess next step will be to connect a monitor and
keyboard to the Xserve; I ordered it with a video card just in case,
but was hoping not to use it.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
Bob

You might not have ServerSetup.pkg installed on the machine where you
installed the Admin tools. This provides sa_srchr, the underlying
utility used to query the 224.0.0.1 multicast address.

It is a pretty dead list. I wish there was more activity myself.

Then you should sign up on a windows server 2003 list to see all the

We just set up the xservers and after the configuration it is just adding
users. Don't give many problems. I have been on the list from the start and
expect to see some activity with 10.4 server SW

Problem solved ... There are two Ethernet ports in the back of the
Xserve, and I was using the top one ... I switched to the bottom one
at a suggestion from someone on the Apple forums, and that solved my
problem! Even the activity lights suddenly behaved normally. Such a
simple thing, but I don't remember reading that anywhere in the
manual; if it's there, I overlooked it.

Subject: [X-Servers] 10.3.9 Server - DHCP and Static IP Addressing
Message-ID:
Hi All,
We have a Netopia R5300 T1 router, with a block of .1-.31 static
assigned internet IPs. Minus 1 address for the router, it is set to
pass the others through untouched. We previously had the router
handling NAT and DHCP but had one of our DHCP Windows clients catch a
Worm and do a broadcast directly through the router.
Two things:
1. I would like the rest of the static IPs to pass through our XServe
for improved firewall, monitoring, etc. but to still be accessible
to/from the internet.
2. I am also trying to set up a block of 192.168.0.x addresses to be
DHCPed through the XServer, predominately for the Windows users.
I have succeeded in getting AFP, DNS, Firewall and VPN activated but
am having trouble setting up DHCP or the static addresses (other than
the IP for the XServe itself). No luck at all with setting up the
static IPs (using NAT?) and only partial luck setting up the DHCP
addresses. If I manually set addresses from the DHCP address block on
the client computers everything works fine. But if I set it up for
dynamic assignment the addresses do not get passed down to the client
machines and they are unable to connect.
I have looked through all the docs, looked through the discussion
boards and posted to the Apple Discussion list but have been unable
to find any info to solve these two items. Anyone have any ideas or
direction to materials covering this?
TIA,
Stan

Enjoy W$ :-)

Do you mean :
your client in one side of the Xserve (LAN Side)
and internet in the second ethernet NIC of your Xserve. (WANSide)
And if so, you want your clients to be able to brwose internet, mail,
etc? and eventually be accessible FROM WAN.

What do you really consider as static IP, static or DHCP
withStaticIP. ?? Anyway-> see further the mail?

You need to do and check many things:
1st) you've done it : DNS setup.
2sd) for your DHCP things, you need
> and only partial luck setting up the DHCP addresses. If I manually
> set addresses from the DHCP address block on the client computers
> everything works fine. But if I set it up for dynamic assignment
> the addresses do not get passed down to the client machines and

a- in Workgroup Manager : go to Computer list and be sure to get all
your computers listed in at least one list.
- for the macs it's easy :-) just click Browse and pick up your
client in the list. Or if you've got the host name and MACAdress just
click on the + button and type in your datas. (I, personnaly, name
the computer with its host name : computer.domain.com)
- for Windows Clients, arrrrggg, I don't remember where on windows
you set this up but you need to enter the computer name in the
windows list ( for exemple : WINMACHINE) on the Xserve. Go on the W$
and in ctrl-click->properties, you can set the WORKGROUP or domain
(depends on your Server admin setup), and the computer name.
b-in SystemePreferences/network
- Be Sure to put your WAN interface in top of the list and your LAN
just after.
- You'll need to enable NAT, and I've read, and successfully tested,
that you SHOULD LEAVE EMPTY the GATEWAY address on the LAN settings.
you also have to enter your Server IP in the DNS field (presuming it
is providing DNS to your LAN).
c- in ServerAdmin
NAT : some say you should ONLY activate the service and NOT click on
the popupmenu.
In facts it depends on your en0 and en1. (to know which is what, just
launch NetworkUtility)
if your LAN is en0 and WAN en1, then you should select share en1.
you can check this in /etc/nat/natd.plist (eventually you'll have to
alter also the natd.plist.default - BACKUP it BEFORE !!!)
d- Server Admin
DHCP -VPN just be sure to NOT have the same 'range' for DHCP and VPN.
exemple:
DHCP : 192.168.1.40->192.168.1.80
VPN : 192.168.1.140->192.168.1.180
enter your Server IP in DNS field.
e- acces from the outside :
You'll have to play with the firewal here, and second you'll have
also to play with your Router, so WAN can get access, but you should
VPN, at this stage and then connect to the server.
f- hope it helps
h- I have suffer (knowing only Mac -since AppleIIe) when I HAD to
setup a W$ in my network? really suffered.
:-)

Subject: [X-Servers] Dual G5 Tower as a 10.4 Server?

Good afternoon all,
First off, will a new PowerMac G5 tower running the new Tiger
Server software. I would assume yes since it is running Tiger
client but I want to make absolutely sure (the decision making
people above me always require assurances from elsewhere!)
Now, I work for a small college in the Montreal (Quebec) area and
I finally have a wee bit of money to replace an old PowerMac G4
(Gigabit Ethernet) machine that has been serving one of my labs.
Originally I looked at the XServe but have found it to be rather
expensive for what you get and wonder what the advantages are
to the XServe are over a G5 tower running the same server software.
The services run in this lab presently include client/mobile client
authentication and workgroup management. I may use it as well -
from time ti time - for basic/limited QuickTime streaming
(essentially, our
present and immediate future needs are not overwhelming). Our DHCP
and DNS services are handled strictly by a Windows server elsewhere
and the likelihood of us using XSan, XServe raid, clusters etc... is
little to none.
Comparing the two, I can go with:
XServe 2.0GHz (single processor)
1GB RAM
80GB Hard drive (x2)
Combo drive
dual gigabit ethernet
no video card
Tiger Server (unlimited client)
or, for roughly the same price
PowerMac G5 (dual 2.0GHz)
1.5GB RAM
250GB Hard drive (x2)
16X SuperDrive
dual gigabit ethernet (Sonnett PCI card already on campus)
Radeon 9600 (128MB) video card
Tiger Server (unlimited client)
There are a number of options that I can tinker with
(i.e. 2.5GB memory and 2x160GB hard drives etc...)
Space and physical security is not an issue for us. Based on our
(seemingly) smaller that typical needs and the specs above I would
think that the Tower/separately bought Server software is a more
logical approach but would appreciate any input.
Sorry for the long post. TIA,
Patrick Ellis

Yes indeed! Or I should qualify that a bit and say I don't see why not,
since all previous versions of OS X Server ran on any Mac that would run the
client. I don't have Tiger Server yet, but my first copy of OS X Server
(10.1, I believe) ran on a stock G4 tower, and I have a copy of Panther
server running on a dual G4 tower.

I was just in your lovely town a couple of weeks ago. Too bad we didn't meet
-- I could have talked to you about your server and then written the trip
off on my taxes! :->
The basic advantages of the Xserve are compact size/rack mount capabilities
and remote sensing. You can do remote management with the G5 tower, but with
the Xserve, you can remotely monitor the temperature, state of the fans,
power supply, etc.

I agree with you -- if the budget is tight, I would rather get the extra CPU
and RAM than spend the money on the Xserve's 1U enclosure. The G5 is also
easier to expand, so you can add more RAM or Fiber Channel cards later.
