Yes and no.

My IMAP server is an Alpha running Tru64.

Mail is received on that machine and delivered to my account via 
Procmail as the local MDA; procmail sorts the incoming mail into an 
assortment of "mail-boxes," all stored under my userid on that machine.

I then use mail.app to access the Alpha via IMAP for mail reading.

I have something on the order of 20 or 30 "buckets" which procmail 
sorts the mail into.
All of which show up as mailboxes in mail.app.
