[X-Unix] what the fork?

I never got this message when doing fink installs from source, but I 
get it regularly with this package, which basically cd's into 
hundreds of directories, then evaluates make rules like
target : file1.o file2.o file3.o file4.o
et cetera.

Is the standard make parallel? Is this at all related to Xcode? Do I 
notice Xcode if I just use regular unix makefiles? (The package I'm 
installing is generic for a dozen unix variants. Nothing about Apple 
in it.)
