Under Installer, select Disk Utility. > Format, erase, partition, whatever. Skip, Try DiskWarrior first. If it cannot repair the hard drive directory you may be forced to initialize the disk. If DW doesn't "see" the drive you may have a failing drive on your hands. If the data on it is valuable see about a recovery service. Caveat: expensive.
