IIRC (it's getting harder to remember all the things that haven't 
worked) he said when he clicked on it in Finder, the file vanished.

Still waiting to hear whether PathFinder worked any better.

Hrm... What about a GUI FTP client connecting to 'localhost'? (be sure 
to enable FTP in sharing)  You might try RBrowser Lite or something 
like that and see if it has any luck.
