[X-Unix] Weirdness Dismounting Locally Attached Volumes

Recently, I've noticed an odd/annoying behavior.

When I eject a disk (non-nework/filesharing type - e.g. A mounted disk
image)... OSX removes it from the desktop...

Yet when I open any finder window the volume(s) are still present there.

If I click on it... I get:   Insert the volume {volume_name} and wait for it
to appear on the desktop, then try again.

Anyone know what's causing this... And how to correct it?
