[X-Unix] /dev basics

Would somebody please give an intro to what what can be learnt about the
system by looking at the /dev directory?

I see so many entries per disk and then all kinds of other things. ls -l has
new types.

Unfortunately "man dev" does not work like it sometimes does for important
config files.
