[X-Unix] setting up aliases in bash / Tiger

Greetings,

Could someone point to me tutorial that would show me what files in Tiger 
I can edit in Terminal so that I can set up some basic aliases...?

I tried this in PICO
IN: /private/etc/
bashrc (renamed to .bashrc)

alias c = 'clear'

Did not seem to work, not sure what I am doing wrong here.
