Or they want to follow in the path of Windows where Software Update only
monitors and updates security and operating system updates and the
individual applications take care of themselves, even if they are Apple
apps.

Yes, in fact mine just did.

Perhaps they figure many people may have Software Update's automatic
checking turned off but would never want to miss an update to such a
critical component such as their photo management software.

Or, perhaps they are getting ready to sell iPhoto to another company and
since Software Update won't support 3rd party utilities...

Why, indeed.
