[X4U] Smartdisk firelite failure

Hi,
   I installed the security update on my dual 867 running 10.3.6 last
nite, and this morning my smartdisk firelite 30GB external drive cannot
be recognized. Do you think they could be related? I was going to try
reinstalling the system software, but my 20 inch samsung monitor says
Video Mode not supported when I tried to use the system software as the
start up disk. Same with tech tools pro.
   My mail and web site are on the drive, and I haven't backed up
lately--stupid I know.
Any help would be appreciated.
