Jeff, thanks for all your help, but it turns out I was making a real Newbie mistake. In the navigation dialog where I was supposed to locate my iPhoto library, I kept opening my iPhoto library folder looking for a file, but it turns out that I could select the folder and iPhoto launched and everything is fine now.
