[X4U] Al PB: no sound from speakers

Sometime in the past week my Al-PB has become mute. Sound comes out fine
through headphones, but there's no sound whatsoever through the speakers.
When I plug the headphones in, the sound output preference changes
automatically from "built-in speakers" to "headphones" and back again when I
disconnect the headphones, but there just ISN'T any sound from the speakers.

OS X 10.3.9.

Any ideas? Another trip to the genius bar?
