Perhaps the power stuttered for a second, and your Mac rebooted after losing power? Do you have a dog or cat that might have hit the button on the front of the machine? Your knee? (Don't laugh, I had a friend who used to do this on his dual 450 G4!) A Finder quit plus other software catastrophe, like a kernel panic? Could a child or animal have hit a power button on the keyboard, if so equipped, which gives you 120 seconds to back out of (Are you sure you want to shutdown/restart)?
