I seem to recall that under 10.3.x, the hard drive itself did not necessarily adopt the view that you specified when you clicked on the finder icon in the dock. This had something to do with permissions. I believe that I fixed it by logging in as root, opening the hard drive icon, setting the view, and then closing the window.
