[X4U] Drag & Drop: where, when, how?

Hello to the members of this list,

I'm very glad I came accros this list. Great topics. I'm new to X. Am  
I dreaming or it's impossible to drag and drop in most applications?  
Not in Mail, not in Safari. Sometimes I would like to drag a portion  
of the text on a Web page and drop it on the desktop as I used to do  
in 9.2. Or drag a portion of the text of a mail message and drop it  
in Word. Impossible. Is there something I should know?
