I answered my own question. If I hit command-F in the Finder and pull up a "SEARCH" window, the search behaves just like spotlight, but at the bottom of the window is a blue bar that displays file paths just like "find" in Panther. So the top of the window says "Searching "Computer". However, if I initiate a Spotlight search for the word "hospice" and open the "spotlight window", the heading of the window is "Spotlight: Hospice" and there is no path... blue bar at the bottom.
