For all intents and purposes, that works fine. The best thing for them to do is hook up the G4 to the G5 in target disk mode and copy over any OS 9 application specific components to the G5. Another option, is to partition a G5 disk into multiple partitions and copy the G4 OS 9 disk to it, restore the G5 installation onto the other partition, and then select the old OS 9 for the classic startup.
