Neil Laubenthal is correct. I have partitioned 6 external drives including SCSIs and three LaCie FireWire drives, formatted with Disk Utility and installed OS X on each one. They have all worked with no problems whatsoever. I would not recommend partitioning if you want to minimize the number of separate drive to manipulate. For example, I erased my 250 GB 800 MHz FireWire drive and reinstalled OS and scratch files on it without partitioning. It is handier that way. You need a reason such as this to not partition. There is nothing flakey about the Mac.
