[X4U] Text to speech on the iPod?

This is a follow up  on my previous post regarding music capture of 
DVDs for transfer to the iPod.

Beside listening to music on my  iPod I would love to be able to 
listing to books, books in text form.

One could of course to capture Text to speech on my Mac and then down 
load the sound file to my iPod, but such files would be huge.

Is it possible, and therefore  has it been done, to load the Text to 
Speech capability of the Mac onto the iPod and then list to text 
files?
