A quick search of the HP website does not show a Photosmart 8500  
printer.  In any case, HP provides generic Mac OS drivers for most of  
its Photosmart printers as follows:

My HP Photosmart 7350 printer works well under OS 10.4.2 and Classic  
with these drivers.
