Is it possible the file types aren't EXACTLY alike; e.g., some with
extensions, some without, or some ".jpg", some ".jpeg", etc.

I don't KNOW, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Finder doesn't demand that
a multiple file selection only include files of identical format and naming
conventions.
