The new Xeons are effectively Intel's high end version of the Core 2 Duo
processors. They've more in common with
the Pentium-M than with the Pentium D's.

The Pentium D cpus are two Pentium 4 'Prescott' cores on one chip. These
have long pipelines, run hot etc and are only
effective at very high clock speeds really.

Core 2 is the future direction, Pentium 4 is likely to be ditched
quietly I suspect, as the Core range of cpus just run rings around it.
