Do they work if he holds down the Function key and hits the buttons? If so,
that's a preference in the System Prefs, must have gotten changed somehow...

Otherwise, has he installed any other software that would hijack Function
keys -- QuicKeys, or assigned them to work in apps like QuarkXPress instead
of in the Finder?
