See Jens reply. The firewire 400 port on the back of my desktop  
machine started to show issues (data corruption when copying to/from  
an external hard drive). This was after a couple of years of hassle  
free use. Tests point to a firewire issue on the machine itself. You  
still have warranty no? Take it in.
