In-Reply-To: <20070228164151.CA0719AAD05@listserver.themacintoshguy.com> Message-ID: Hello, Mark and Tim! I never made it to AIT; I jumped ship when I got fed up with DDS-4. Tapes are just too damned expensive today, the tape drives are delicate and even more expensive, and there is a real concern about future driver availability. Add to that a lot of people's concern about Dantz's handling of Retrospect and I would say "get out while you still can." On a cost-per-gigabyte basis, a new, large hard disk in a cheapie external drive beats tape media hands-down, even ignoring the equipment and software overhead of tapes. It is a couple orders of magnitude faster, offers longer storage life, will be hardware-compatible with new computers for the foreseeable future, and is compatible with a huge assortment of backup utilities. Buying hard disks and then using them just for storage may require an emotional adjustment for those of us who've been in computing since ancient times, but really, they are the cost-effective option. DVDs are even cheaper, but can we really trust them to last? The labor overhead involved in burning them is much higher than with hard disks, which offsets the media cost, also. -- Robert MacLeay Freelance editorial and creative services http://tinyurl.com/2zlf8 On Wed, 28 Feb 2007 11:17:00 -0500, Mark Des Cotes wrote: > We're looking into updating/revamping our backup system. I also have the misfortune of dealing with Windows, both within my own house and without. Eventually my wife will switch but convincing her to spend over $3k USD on a machine that will do what we both want is not likely to happen soon. For now I'll just soldier on with my iBook G4 and fix her Win XP box when it hiccups. . .until the hardware fails or I can talk her into some form of Linux. What your neighbor is seeing is probably part of the Windows automatic update feature/bug built into XP and also Vista in some form or other. Mine just launches when I click on it, installs whatever it has downloaded, and usually asks me to reboot. There will be no Vista in my house. As noted above PC's will run linux in my house as soon as my wife relents. I prefer a happy house over something as friggin' insignificant as a disagreement over software and hardware. Mr. Hargreaves, Your response and attitude are precisely why I no longer attend local MUG meetings or hang out with the local 'in' Mac crowd. If we don't work with and help our less fortunate neighbors who still labor under the yoke of MS oppression they will never see the light, so to speak. I always have my iBook with me when I help PC users and they are generally impressed by the hardware and software. Most of them balk at the price of Apple units until I remind them that my iBook is almost four years old and still does everything I ask of it with grace and aplomb if not as much speed as a new MacBook or MB Pro would. My daughter is still using a G3 iMac 233. Wer'e not sure what flavor it started as but it is now a Bondi/Blueberry mix of parts. All that is beside the point, what matters is that it works, slowly but well. How many PC owners can say that about their 4 year old laptop or desktop? Perhaps we could consider a new list for issues like Paul's and, inevitably, any one else who tries to use MS operating systems on their Mac. That would keep this one clear for OS X issues only. That should help keep everyone happy. It is unwise to hold those at arm's length that you would have join the faithful. This is as true in computers as it is in religion or politics. Did I say that Mac users should not work with/help those who use Windows? No. I said that this list is an inappropriate place to post Windows questions, being as its name is "A place to discuss Mac OS X for the casual user." I am the lone Mac user in an organization of 15 and I help all of them with Windows. I get questions on a daily/weekly basis about 'what's this do? how do I do this? what's this error mean?' and if I don't know the answer, I don't query this list. > Perhaps we could consider a new list for issues like Paul's and, inevitably, > any one else who tries to use MS operating systems on their Mac. People used to debate about whether to blithely accept updates from MS of not, but now days you can't afford not to keep up from a security standpoint. From memory, if they accept the update they can either let it automatically download and install the updates or they can choose the custom option which lets them choose from a list of updates to download. After the updates are downloaded they will start to install. If they want to watch the installation process right click on the icon and choose the appropriate option (or maybe just double click on it). Another option is to go to the Automatic Updates control panel and choose to let it download and install updates automatically. Then they will just get a notice that they need to reboot on occasion. In the BBC newscast I referred to, the guest drew special attention to banking. He appeared to say that if I were to call up my bank's web site, a third party could direct me to their web site where I might unknowingly give them vital information. He said that the greatest danger was with routers for which the default password was not changed. Apparently default passwords are well known. I subscribe to a large ISP (SBC, Souther Bell Corp.) and so the default password on the router they provided may be common knowledge. It was for this reason that I was concerned. During the installation process I recall no point at which a password was requested. I recently configured Apple Mail to access AOL's IMAP servers, and it seems to work OK for my purposes. However, I noticed that I received an e-mail from a coworker in which she made a reference to an excel spreadsheet attachment. In Mail, there is no attachment visible: no disclosure triangle, no icon of the attached file at the bottom of the e-mail, and no "paperclip" icon to click and download the attachment, and no "attachments tab" to click on. I opened AOL's client program, and the attachment is there and could be downloaded, no problem. What's really weird is that I then forwarded the email to both my AOL address and my .Mac address. I did this from both the AOL client and Mail. Then, in Mail, I opened my .Mac email account. The attachment was there, no problem. But when I opened my AOL e-mail from within Mail, there was no attachment! I'm guessing that there is something specific about AOL's interaction with Mail that is screwing things up. The "option-apple-spacebar" searches everything in Spotlight's index (not the entire computer - directories such as /etc are notably absent). In order for the O- Spotlight search to behave as you wish you would need to tell Spotlight to index nothing but your home directory; I am not sure this is possible. Stroller. This is exactly the scenario proposed in the BBC article (I think I read it on the BBC website). This vulnerability can mostly be taken advantage of in routers with no wireless encryption enabled. I think that on balance that this is really only a theoretical attack, or one which will only ever be applied to specific targets - there are fewer open APs these days than there were only a year or two ago (although WEP-cracking does increase the number of vulnerable targets), and although many of those that are configured in ignorance are wide-open, an attacker would have to war-drive in order to find them. I think that phishing for bank details would only be viable for a well-organised gang in a metropolitan area (such as London), and probably even then there are easier ways to earn a buck. I suppose that transfers to an IBAN in $COUNTRY may be untraceable, but does your bank allow you to dispose of funds so anonymously? Stroller. I remember one Mac O/S upgrade that had problems with some cheap ram. A lot of people had to pull the ram out and throw it away (or try to dump it on eBay). I try to stick to name brand ram, like Crucial. Their prices are reasonable even from their own web site, so you are sure you are getting the real deal. Having said that, I have cheap ram in my current Mac that was bundled in the purchase price of the system. I haven't had any problems at all as far as I know. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you have a backup, you can easily restore at least to the date at which you made the backup. Without the backup, if you haven't downloaded things and saved and deleted things since it happened, you could try FileSalvage or DataRescue to to a rescue of deleted data on your drive. If you have been using the drive as normal since it happened and if you have no backup, then I don't think there's a way to get back to where you were. Message-ID: My parents have a network consisting of a dsl modem, Snow Airport base station, Netgear Range Extender (which uses the one ethernet port on the ABS) to boost the signal to a room above the garage, my mom's iMac G4 (that connects with an Airport card, and is close enough that it doesn't use the Range Extender's signal), and my dad's Dell pc with some kind of wifi card, which needs the Netgear Range Extender to connect. All has been working fine. I stopped by the house to answer my mother's query about Software Update's persistent messages. It turned out she was quite behind, and was still at 10.4.7. I used Software Update to install 10.4.8. Instead of an easy restart, I had to shut down--I had failed to notice that my dad was logged in with fast user switching (this probaby has nothing to do with anything, but in case it does, I'm mentioning it), so I shut down, and then re-booted and repaired permissions. Everything seemed to go fine with that. Except, the Airport Base Station is dead to us. No matter what we've tried, we can't get it to be seen. We have tried several hard re-sets of the ABS to no avail--we did connect the iMac by ethernet to the ABS to reconfigure it afterward, and the lights seem to indicate that the ABS is actually resetting itself. We tried trashing three preference files (com.apple.internetconfig and the like, we'd found a list on Macfixit). We deleted all the networks listed as preferred networks, and re-listing them (something else suggested on Macfixit). We're using Airport Admin Utility and Internet Config. Neither find any trace of the ABS and its ID. We have connected the iMac directly to the dsl modem and finished updating it, so it now has the remaining Security Updates installed. Does anyone have any ideas for something else we could try? Is the answer a new and speedier (g) router? The docs say that the drive supports this. Either reformat, probably your best option if you don't need MS compatibility, or look into MacFuse, http://code.google.com/p/ macfuse/, which has brings support for many alien file systems to OS X. BTW, I found this information by doing a web search on "OS X ntfs". I only have the "mamma bear" version -- 37 CDs with a paltry 525,000 images. A couple years ago I copied them all to a hard disk. This is the way to go; can't you spare 30-odd MB of disk space on a production machine? My CDs are organized into folders spanning multiple disks, so having them all on a single HD actually matches the book better. And Spotlight finds file names sooo fast! This also allows you to set up some Photoshop actions to create online previews of all those thousands of preview-deprived eps files! I did this only for the more popular subjects. Finally, there's a ton of bonus stuff that is not cataloged in the fat book(s). Viewing these on a CD/DVD is an exercise in patience, but almost practical on a fast drive.
