Google "mac osx boot usb" without the quotes.  You'll find reference  
to a permissions problem using USB boot drives and a way to overcome it.

I've just gotten a 64 bit XP Pro working with minimal hassle, using  
VMware Fusion.  It even recognizes all four processors on my MacPro.  
Neet!  But I'm using the internal boot drive.
