[X4U] External HD Reliability?

I've been eyeing this setup:
2x http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST3500320AS/
1x http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW912AL2/

The enclosure firmware can be configured to that the drives are spanned, or
mount separately.  I'm thinking I'd have them mount separately and let OS X
manage mirroring across them.
