You're probably right in today's world. That's why I wouldn't attempt to connect with out IT's OK. But your boss can help a lot in convincing IT of the legitimate business need. After all that's what IT is there for! And it's their responsibility to help see that these needs are met. At the time my company had 180,000 employees with manufacturing operations on 6 continents. At the time we had full desktop communications with all other sites in the world. So it's out of the realm of small companies. It can be done if you're thoughtful about how to do it and getting the right people on board.
