AppleCare costs different amounts depending on the computer it's covering.

AppleCare Protection Plan from Apple, for a Mini, is just $149.
MacBook Air: $249
iPod/Touch: $59
iMac: $169
MacBook Pro: $349
iPod Nano/Shuffle: $39

And those are Apple's prices; you can usually do better elsewhere.

In this case, the entry-level Mini is $599, so the APP price equals 1/4 of
the replacement price -- not 1/3. Of the upper Mini, APP becomes equal to a
little more than 20% of the replacement price.

It depends on the level of risk with which one is comfortable.
