[X4U] Time Machine problem

I have a problem with Time Machine doing backups on an Intel iMac. I  
get the preparing for update message. I left it running overnight and  
it is still not backing up. Looking at Apple's site the advice is  
basically start over or wait for it work *which is not working* There  
is still about 100 gigs of storage capacity on the time machine drive.

Any advice?
