Can you hear your fans? That's a sign that you're running hot. Download and install iStat Menus. Check your temps and your fan speeds. I have a 24" Core 2 Duo iMac that is exhibiting high CPU fan speed and high temps on the GPU. From what I have learned recently, I may need a new logic board. I find out tomorrow at the Apple Store.
