Every PC, Linux box, Windows machine, & OS X machine all have MAC addresses ( MAC = media access control) It’s a unique 12 byte hex number that identifies your Ethernet card or chip. The IP number which looks something like 192.168.4.68 is a unique number used by the local network to communicate with your Ethernet card or chip. You can find your mac address by going to the Macintosh's system preferences/network once your there touch the “Ethernet” tab below you’ll see the “ETHERNET ID” that looks something like 00:0a:95:d8:6b:4e this is your mac address and the IT folks need it so they can tell their equipment to assign an IP number to your machine. They do that so only the machines that are listed in their “mac address allow list” can gain access to their network...<BR>
